Frequently Asked Questions
Your guide to energy-efficient water heating, Eco-Logical technology, installation, rebates, and home energy savings in Maryland.
Getting Started
What is a heat pump water heater?
A heat pump water heater uses electricity
to transfer heat from surrounding air
into stored water, rather than relying
entirely on conventional electric
resistance heating.
How much electricity can I save?
Heat pump water heaters can use
substantially less electricity than
standard electric water heaters.
Actual savings depend on equipment,
household usage, installation
conditions, and energy rates.
Will I have enough hot water?
When properly sized, a heat pump water
heater can provide dependable hot
water for your household. Hybrid
models also include electric
backup heating for higher demand.
Are heat pump water heaters environmentally friendly?
Their efficient operation can reduce
electricity consumption and associated
emissions compared with conventional
electric resistance water heating.
Eco-Logical UNOS & OMNI
What is the UNOS Tower System?
The Eco-Logical UNOS is an integrated
hybrid heat pump water heater combining
the heat pump and storage tank into
one indoor unit. It is available in
50, 65, and 80-gallon models.
What is the OMNI Split System?
The Eco-Logical OMNI system uses an
outdoor heat pump connected to a
separate indoor water storage tank.
This design eliminates condensation
and eliminates cold air byproductes
offers installation flexibility and
reduces the need to extract heat
from indoor air.
Which system is better for my home?
UNOS may be a great option for
conventional indoor replacements
with adequate airflow and space.
OMNI can be useful where indoor
space or airflow is limited.
The best option depends on
your home's specific requirements.
What sizes are available?
UNOS offers nominal 50, 65, and
80-gallon models. OMNI tank
capacities and electrical
configurations vary by model.
Proper sizing is based on
household hot water demand.
Installation & Maintenance
Where can a heat pump water heater be installed?
Suitable locations may include
basements, utility rooms, and
designated mechanical spaces.
Installation requirements depend
on the equipment, available
airflow, temperature, plumbing,
and electrical connections.
Do I need an electrical upgrade?
Some installations may require
electrical modifications.
The requirements depend on the
model, circuit availability,
electrical panel capacity,
and existing equipment.
How often does the system need maintenance?
Regular maintenance can include
checking the air filter,
condensate drainage, water
connections, and tank components.
Always follow the manufacturer's
recommended maintenance schedule.
Will the system work in winter?
Heat pump operation depends on
ambient temperatures and the
selected model. Hybrid systems
can provide supplemental electric
resistance heating when necessary.
Operating limits should be verified
before installation.
Maryland Rebates & Savings
Are heat pump water heater rebates available in Maryland?
Maryland utilities have offered
incentives for qualifying
energy-efficient water heaters.
Program availability, amounts,
and deadlines can change.
Confirm current eligibility
before installation.
What about BGE, Pepco, and Delmarva Power?
These utility territories have
participated in Maryland
energy-efficiency incentive
programs. Specific offerings
and equipment qualifications
vary by utility and program period.
Does every Eco-Logical model qualify for incentives?
Not necessarily. Qualification
depends on the exact model,
certification, installation
requirements, and current
utility program rules.
How can I reduce my home's energy costs further?
In addition to efficient water
heating, insulation improvements,
air sealing, and appropriately
selected HVAC equipment can
help improve overall home
energy performance.
